Presentation on Intrinsic Therapeutics’ Barricaid Solution at CNS 2019

Focused on next-generation medical solutions, Intrinsic Therapeutics, Inc., has developed Barricaid as an annular closure implant suitable for many spinal disc herniation patients. Intrinsic Therapeutics’ solution eliminates the need for aggressive lumbar discectomies for a number of patients and significantly reduces the risk of postoperative complications.

Intrinsic Therapeutics maintains a strong industry presence and will exhibit at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Annual Meeting in October 2019. The five-day event, which will be held at the Moscone Center, West Building in San Francisco, will feature a sponsored talk by Dr. Robert Whitmore on the functionality, clinical and surgical outcomes of the Barricaid device.

In addition, Dr. Ali Araghi will make a non-sponsored presentation, “Reoperations Following Lumbar Discectomy Are Associated with Worse Clinical Outcomes and Greater Socioeconomic Burden 3 Years after the Primary Procedure.” This timely CNS talk will bring focus to the potential fiscal and clinical impact of reoperation in the lumbar spine that Barricaid could avert.

The History of Intrinsic Therapeutics

Under the direction of Founder and Executive Director Gregory Lambrecht and Chief Executive Officer, President, and Director Cary P. Hagen, Intrinsic Therapeutics develops and manufactures medical devices that address lumbar disc herniation and annular defects. Sold under the brand name Barricaid, these devices have passed definitive level 1B randomized trials that involved more than 550 patients. Intrinsic Therapeutics has shown that Barricaid can reduce re-herniation following lumbar disc surgery and reoperations following disc surgery by over 50 percent. These figures are particularly impressive in light of the fact that, in the wake of reoperation, 40% of patients who are re-operated are not working at two years and are nearly four times more likely to suffer permanent disabilities.

Headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, for nearly two decades, Intrinsic Therapeutics changed its name from Intrinsic Orthopedics in 2003. The company currently employs about 20 employees and holds active membership in the North American Spine Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
